In your opinion, what is the most important characteristic to be successful in life?

Honesty is very important in life. One thing I find common among Japanese people is little white lies. That is little lies, as to not hurt the feelings of others. In fact, when my students want to quit my lesson, they often tell me another excuse why they are quitting instead of just telling me they are quitting. Also, when my japanese we very very very beginner level, I would always hear 日本語が上手 . I didn't, and still don't, like these little lies. I do not believe they are honest, even though they are intended not to hurt me (which they wont, I prefer to hear the truth no matter how hard it is).

and yes, you need to be honest with yourself. That is why I love lolita fashion. it is an honest reflection of the little girl who is still inside me. It is not cosplay and it is not sexual (I hate sexual things anyway), It is just a simple honest reflection of myself. Being honest with myself has made me a better person.

When I skyped Steve a while back, he told me that sincerity is the key with international communication. Sincerity and honesty are very similar to each other. In fact, I cant hardly tell the difference between them. So being honest and sincere is very important in life.
I totally agree when you write: Being honest with myself has made me a better person. I feel that way, too. You may hurt other people's feelings whether you intend to or not. So, you'd better be at least true to yourself.
As for Japanese people's words "日本語が上手", I must say they are not always lies, because I myself sometimes say that to foreigners, but I do mean it every time. It might be because we do not hear a foreigner speaking Japanese often. I have a couple of friends who have been living in Japan for years, but never speak Japanese except short words like "ありがとう", "すみません", or ”どうも". When I hear someone says more than these, for example, "今日はちょっと寒いですね”, then I do think "Wow, she speaks Japanese very well." Yes, there is a person who is fluent like our Steve(!), but we hardly see someone like him in person. Please understand us hearing non-native's Japanese is much less common than English speaker hearing non-native's English.
Anyway, this is my "honest" opinion! :-)
